| Friday, September 23,2011, was a landmark day for The Palace Theater in downtown Childress. Celebrating the restoration of the facade of the historic building, Childress Theatre Company and the CHS Class of 1965 hosted returning alumni of Childress High School at a nostalgia-filled block party. Hundreds spent the evening visiting, enjoying music from decades past, vintage cars, and soft drinks and popcorn served from the portico of the Palace. CHS grads lingered as the dusk turned into night. They danced and reminisced in the glow of the vintage neon sign. Several ventured into the Palace, reliving youthful memories in the midst of present ruin. Since that night, the front of the old Palace Barber Shop, joining the Palace on the north, has been completed with reproduction glass-paned wall and double doors. The 1937 overhead transom was saved in the restoration. An original Palace Barber Shop chair, owned by the late Ray Stone, has been donated by Robby Jones, Childress Glass Company, and will be placed inside the refurbished shop. The iron pipe barber pole was donated by Teddy Thomas. Plans are to eventually place a striped canvas awning on the barber shop. The vertical neon sign was restored and reset in March 2010 as Phase I of the Palace restoration, Phase II was completed with the barbershop project, and the restoration will enter Phase III as soon as funds are acquired to reroof the building. When the roof is in place, Phase IV work can begin on the interior. In the meantime, the restored white stucco Art Deco facade, c. 1937 and the old Palace neon, will continue to light up Main Street. Childress Theatre Company, Inc., is a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit corporation, and all funds raised are dedicated to the continuing restoration efforts on The Palace Theater. Donations to the Palace Restoration can be made using PayPal on this website. All donation are tax-deductible. |
